This is a childhood favorite of mine. My Mom always used to make these at the holidays. I do not know where the recipe is from.

Ingredients for the cookies
  • 1/2 cup of butter softened
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 2 3/4 cups of flour

Ingredients for the frosting I suggest doubling this if you plan to decorate your cookies
  • 1 box of conf. sugar = to one pound
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1/2 cup of shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tarter
  • 1/3 cup of water

Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Cream the butter and the sugar.
  3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.
  4. Add the baking powder.
  5. Add the flour one cup at a time.
  6. Roll out the dough and use your favorite cookie cutter shapes.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 6-7 minutes. Remove from sheet and place onto a cooling rack.
  8. After the cookies have cooled mix the ingredients for the frosting together with a mixer. Color the frosting and decorate. Enjoy
